A dog stands on a mountain on La Palma, in the Canary Islands, Spain, that overlooks columns of black lava produced by the Cumbre Vieja volcanic eruption. According to data from the Copernicus satellite, the lava has already covered 1,042 hectares of the island since the eruption began on 19 September, affecting or destroying 2,623 buildings and requiring 7,000 people to leave their homes at some point.
