Now, her organisation rescues scores of people in domestic servitude every year. Domestic servitude is one of the most prevalent forms of modern slavery in the UK and largely affects foreign domestic workers from places such as the Philippines and Indonesia.

Demonstrations erupted after the death in custody of activist Nizar Banat. Amnesty International said the neck restraint technique used in the arrest of a Romany man was ‘reckless, unnecessary and disproportionate, and therefore unlawful’.

About 50 members of the country’s persecuted LBGTQ+ community took part at high risk to themselves. Homosexuality is illegal in Malawi, and those who identify as anything other than heterosexual face arrest and imprisonment.

Les Hijabeuses, a group of young hijab-wearing female footballers, are campaigning against the French football federation’s ban on wearing hijabs in official club matches. It is part of a wider battle to promote a more inclusive society in France, which has seen a rise in far-right groups and Islamophobia.

China is using its economic clout across Asia and the Middle East to target Uyghur Muslims living beyond its borders through a sprawling system of transnational repression, according to the No Space Left to Run report. Researchers found at least 28 countries had been complicit in Beijing’s attempts to control its citizens abroad.
